School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a school-wide framework for developing and explicitly teaching appropriate and positive behaviours. SWPBS comprises a broad range of systemic and individualised strategies for developing and improving student social and learning outcomes. The systematic strategies implemented will also prevent problematic behaviour from occurring among students in different environment settings.

The designed SWPBS practices and interventions are based on research and evidence, which have demonstrated to be effective when implemented. Introducing, modelling, and reinforcing positive school and social behaviour are important steps of a student’s educational experience. Teaching and understanding behavioural expectations and acknowledging students for applying and following them, is a more effective and positive approach than waiting for inappropriate behaviour or incidents to occur and then to respond to.

SWPBS is a collaborative effort that actively involves all staff at Seabrook PS. This approach will assist in:

  • Recognising the critical importance of consistency across the school and in different settings
  • Helping create a safe school and effective learning environments
  • Having more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction
  • Increasing respectful and positive behaviour and relationships among students and staff
  • Improving social-emotional wellbeing of all students
  • A more predictable learning environment with improved perceptions of safety and increased attendance

Foundational Elements of SWPBS

The four critical features of SWPBS include:

  • Locally-meaningful and culturally-relevant outcomes
  • Empirically-supported practices
  • Systems to support implementation
  • Data to monitor effective and equitable implementation and to guide decision making.

The inclusion of Seabrook Primary’s School-Wide Matrix of Expected Behaviours align with our school’s mission and defined values. Each expected behaviour is explicitly taught, modelled and reinforced in every classroom under all our school settings. Our 3 defined values are:
