The Department of Education Digital Learning policy updated to align with the announcement by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education on 16 October 2025 on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programs and student digital device usage times in schools with primary students.
Commencing in 2027, schools with primary students must not invite or allow families to purchase or bring their own devices for use at school.
Schools will be able to continue to use BYO devices for primary school aged students where it is an identified support for a student with disability.
At the school’s discretion, primary students who have been using BYO devices prior to 2027 can continue using their devices until they need to be replaced.
Schools with primary students are recommended to design teaching and learning programs consistent with the following student digital device usage times:
Years F-2: Minimal use other than learning about and with digital technologies as set out in the Victorian Curriculum 2.0
Years 3-6: Maximum of 90 minutes per day.
Digital devices at Seabrook Primary School
Our teaching and learning program has already shifted in favour of:
Less tech.
Seabrook Primary School’s teaching and learning program is largely text-based, reducing the need for individual student digital device usage at school.
Our knowledge-rich and text curriculum includes picture books, novels, textbooks, non-fiction texts and whole-class presentations. This approach significantly reduces the time needed on digital devices.
From 2027, Seabrook Primary School will continue to provide access to school-owned devices for learning about and with digital technologies as set out in the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Our students may continue on to a secondary school setting where a BYOD program is offered, and it will be important they have the necessary skills and knowledge to support this transition.
Digital technologies is a key aspect of our STEM program. Our school is proud to offer this high-quality and well-resourced specialist subject across every year of schooling from Prep to Year 6.
Where digital devices are required to support the broader teaching and learning program, access to digital devices will be provided by the school as seen fit and according to available budgetary resources.
Department policy ensures that, from 2027, primary schools must not allow families to purchase or bring their own student digital devices.
If your child has already purchased a device under our BYOD (BYOM) MacBook program for use at school in 2026 or earlier, our school is able to provide opportunities for continued use when appropriate. We will update families as our programs evolve in response to research and Department policy.
